Requirements for affiliation for foreign affiliates

  1. An application letter for affiliation which should be addressed to the Director
  2. A Full Research Proposal of the works the researcher is going to carry out in Zambia. The proposal should explain the benefits of research to the local people who will be his/her research participants. The proposal should also outline the relevance of the study to the social, economical and/or technological development of Zambia.
  3. Researcher's Curriculum Vitae
  4. Three References from the researcher's Professors and /or Supervisor in the country of origin.
  5. Two letters of introduction from the researcher's institution
  6. Application Form for Affiliation. (This can be obtained from the Research Affiliations Officer or from the Forms for Procedures in the Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies)
  7. Affiliation Fee is US$100
  8. Ethical Clearance - The researcher is requireed to obtain ethical clearance from one of the University of Zambia Research Ethics Committees before embarking on field work. Ethical Clearance Fees ranges between K2,500.00 to K4,000.00 or dollar equivalent
  9. Two Passport size photos for the affiliate's file. This can be obtained while in Zambia

Requirements for affiliation for visiting Researchers 

  1. Full Proposal of the works the researcher is going to carry out in Zambia outlining its benefits to the local participants. The proposal should also outline the relevance of the study to the social, economical and/or technological development to Zambia
  2. Researcher's Curriculum Vitae
  3. Application Form for Affiliation (To be obtained from the Research Affiliation Officer or from the Forms for Procedures in the Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies)
  4. Two passport size photos for the affiliate's file. This can be obtained while in Zambia
  5. Evidence of Ethical clearance to be provided by the researcher or the School/Department the researcher is collaborating with.
  6. Confirmation letter from the School/Department that they are collaborating with the researcher

Requirements for Zambian Affiliates

  1. Full Research Proposal of the works the researcher is going to carry out in Zambia outlining the relevance of the study to the social, economical, and/or technological development of Zambia
  2. Researcher's Curriculum Vitae
  3. Application Form for Affiliation (To be obtained from the Research Affiliations Office or downloaded from the Forms for Procedures in the Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies)
  4. Two passport size photos for the affiliate's file
  5. Evidence of Ethical clearance with one of the University of Zambia Ethics Committees

Requirements for Immigration

  1. An Application Form 8 from Immigration (The researcher has to fill in this application form upon arrival in Zambia)
  2. Bank Certified Cheque (Currently in the sum of K1,500.00 plus K116.00 for processing the study permit) payable to the Chief Immigration Officer - you can obtain this when you arrive in the country
  3. Police Clearance Report indicating that the researcher has no criminal record. This is very important; (please ensure that you get it before coming to Zambia)
  4. An X-ray Report obtainable from one of the Zambian Clinics/Hospitals
  5. Certified Copies (2) of the researcher's Passport (This can be obtained while in Zambia)
  6. Two Passport Soze photos (Zambian size) which you can get while in Zambia

 Requirements During and Upon Completion of the Affiliation

  1. The Research Affiliate is required to present their proposals and findings to the hosting unit of the University; and
  2. They are also required to deposit a copy (Report or Published Paper) of their findings with the hosting unit, who in turn will submit a copy to the University Library

Research Affiliation is a scheme that enables local and foreign researchers to conduct their research in Zambia under the Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies as Research Affiliates.

Benefits

The Research Affiliate will benefit by:

  1. being allowed to undertake this/her research in Zambia
  2. having his/her research permit cleared at Zambian Immigration by DRGS; and
  3. having access to University library facilities whilst conducting research in Zambia

The scheme is in three categories:

Category I

The first category is for foreign students pursuing either Masters or PhD programmes where the students are required by their universities to conduct research in Zambia.

Category II

The second category is for visiting researchers who are carrying out research in collaboration with their coleages from the University of Zambia. Theses visiting researchers are usually housed by the schools or departments that they are visiting and are sometimes involved in lecturing at UNZA.

Category III

The third category is for Zambian researchers who are carrying out research but need to be affiliated with UNZA whilst carrying out their research.

Requirements for Affiliation

Seed Money

In line with the University of Zambia's mission regarding research, the Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies is providing what it is calling 'Seed Money' to promote research activities in the University. A research symposium is held where the individuals whose research project proposal were funded present their findings.

Research Africa - Research Professional Database

UNZA through DRGS subscribes to Research Africa Funding Platform. Research Africa is a platform designed for institution-wide access to allow all staff access to search for their individual discipline specific funding.

Research Ethics Committee

There are three Research Ethics Committees charged with the responsibility of reviewing research proposals for research ethical compliance. Their mandate is not restricted to the University of Zambia researchers but also covers collaborative research with other institutions.

  1. Humanities and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee (HSSREC)
  2. Natural and Applied Sciences Research Ethics Committee (NASREC)
  3. Biomedical Research Ethics Committee (UNZABREC)
